The Badlands

I had a dream about the badlands. I turned that into an overnighter In Drumheller, Alberta, where I shot landscape, nature, and wildlife photographs And dinosaurs… so many dinosaurs.

Speaking At The St. Albert Photography Club, May 9th

On Wednesday, May 9th I am excited and sort of nervous to be presenting to the St. Albert Photography Club. The club meets meets from 7-9 pm at the St. Albert Inn & Suites (map below). I have summarized my presentation as follows.

For five years, Jeff Day has run more than 9,500 kilometers, mostly outdoors, with a camera in a backpack, capturing images in and around Edmonton. He calls his work ‘Runtography’. It’s a word he coined to legitimize what he’s been doing in his off-hours to make it sound, well, less insane! He will present an overview of some of his favourite imagery, explain his unique image collecting process and answer any questions.

My photography is an unbelievably solitary endeavor, so speaking in public about it is a stretch of my general comfort level, in a good way. I think. I hope...

My Kit

ADJ - Running Equipment - _SQ - IMG7149.jpg

A lot of people were interested in how I do this. So I have included a photo of my kit.  This is what I pack  around.  Excluding the camera...which I needed to take the shot (Pentax K2) and my clothes. My clothes are ridiculous in winter. So many... clothes...but in summer, less ridiculous.

  • Phone
  • Headphones (music because I run...and music is the gas)
  • MEC sling bag. (The best thing ever)
  • Sunglasses
  • Bank Card
  • Camera (Pentax K2)

No water. I have never carried water as it's extra weight.

In April 2018 one of my photographs will be features in Alberta Views Magazine. Earlier in the month, I was contacted through my Flickr account by an art director regarding an image I took in Edmonton's river valley last year.

She said...

"Each month we run a section called "Eye on Alberta", where we gather shorter items related to Alberta that were published elsewhere; I always try to open this section with an interesting view on Alberta, hence your photo would be a great fit. Alberta Views is a monthly general-interest magazine covering the arts, culture and politics of Alberta. We have a print run of some 15,000 and are in our 20th year of continuous publication."

This is the image. I called it 'Momentarily' as it was a quick interaction with an elusive urban coyote.

Hello 2018 — I Expect Great Things From You

2017 Was So The Year of the Fire Rooster

everything sucking.jpg

Though I try to be positive, on reflection, I have concluded that 2017 was a bit of a bummer. From worldwide geopolitical upheaval to unrelenting inappropriate touching (not by me, by every other man in the world, apparently), it just didn't seem a very hopeful 12 months. This was also the case within my personal life. It was one dreary crisis after another. The economy stank. A good friend moved far away. The local hockey team sucked. Tom Petty died. The Ken doll was given a hipster makeover. There was even a discussion about a soda tax...

Then in June, during an out-of-town funeral for a rather beloved family member, a water line in our toilet connection snapped and a flood took out 70% of house. A flood! So biblical.

Gawd, it was just a terrible year.

But all that is past us now. It's a new year. 2018...The Year of the Smoking Dog. According to the Chinese Zodiac my horoscope says: In 2018, the Goat (me) learns to say no and manages to prioritize his personal goals for himself against the desires of his loved ones.

Seems bang on.

2018 don't disappoint me.
